Five Elements Food Concept


The Five Elements is a system of correspondences that was used traditionally in China from the time of the Han dynasty in various fields of activity, even architecture, engineering and political affairs! The Five Elements was an effort to reach a provisional classification of the properties of material things and natural phenomena. In recent centuries the Five Elements has mainly been used in traditional East Asian Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine to classify body types,  time cycles and to select acupuncture points.

We can also use the Five Elements to gain an understanding of what types of foods are associated with different health conditions and to understand the physiology of different constitutional types. The Five Elements are in Chinese Medicine Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, in Ayurvedic Medicine  Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Infinity. In Chinese medicine there is a Yin and  a Yang type associated to the elements and in Ayurvedic medicine  the constitutional types are vata, pitta and kapha.
